Specialist in Science (Biology, Chemistry and Physics)

What key messages about your subject area would you like to share?

Biology is the study of the organic world around us; it is the branch of science that endeavours to explore and gain understanding of the complex and diverse wonders of living organisms within the natural world. Through this subject the students will develop understanding of the nature, processes and methods involved in biology through practical investigations and problem solving both in the laboratory and in the field. This subject can lead to a multitude of career paths that can change the world such as medicine, conservation and nanotechnology.

In my lessons, I have the chance to explore my favourite subject – Science, whether it be exploring electricity or growing plants to show cells working. Being a teacher means I belong to a greater group of people who share the same sense of purpose; a common identity and common challenges. At their best, schools are giant families, offering that sense of togetherness and mutual support. We’re all in it together. There is never a dull moment I am constantly learning and teaching which makes it impossible to be bored! Finding out new facts and skills whilst creating lessons or enrichments is fantastic. Learning from the students every day is fascinating, whether it be a student telling me about their favourite book or a group of students showing me a new resource for our subject.

I enjoy travelling round the world with my husband exploring different cultures, cities and experiences; so far I have visited four continents. Being outdoors is my main passion, whether it is growing fruits and vegetables in the allotment or walking the dog in country parks. I play in the local brass band which allows me to travel the country playing in concerts and contesting against other like minded individuals.

Outwood Academy Freeston is full of students and staff who support each other to provide our students with the knowledge, skills and understanding that they will need in order for them to realise their ambitions, pursue their chosen career pathways and to make valuable contributions to society. The academy is a community which will create a positive learning environment but also a safe space to make friends and enjoy your time here.
