David Dixon

Music Teacher

Specialist in Music

When we sing or create music, we use all the parts of the brain: left, right, front, and back. All these parts collaborate. That is very unique! "I would teach children music, physics, and philosophy; but most importantly music, for the patterns in music and all the arts are the keys to learning." - Plato.

There are many areas of a student's learning which can benefit from the teaching of music, most of which have an application far beyond the subject:

-enjoyment in making music, and the discovery that all of them have some degree of musical ability;

-teamwork; group decision-making; responsibility and discipline; organisation;

-developing analytical skills: both of the individual and group;

-the realisation of the value of criticism, and its constructive potential;

-co-ordination and manual dexterity

I have always loved music, it is who I am, not what I do. I started to learn a musical instrument whilst in Y7 at school . I got involved with everything to do with music the school had to offer; bands, choirs, orchestras and lots of concerts. It opened my eyes to all the wonderful things you can achieve as a musician. I have performed in some of the world's most iconic concert venues and have toured the world as a musician - All opportunities that have shaped my love of music. It's because of this that I wanted to give as many of my students the same opportunities as I was lucky enough to have. I love seeing past pupils going on to become professional musicians and teachers in their own right. I am a musician, so there's not much time left for other hobbies. I enjoy playing with lots of different musicians in lots of styles of music from brass bands to orchestras, folk music to theatre music, pop to rock. I am also a bit of a computer geek. OAFreeston is a school where you can succeed, where staff will go far beyond the norm to help you reach your potential. You’ll be given lots of opportunities to get involved with exciting activities such as learning an instrument, singing in a choir or being part of one of the school shows or concerts. Just get involved and give it a go!
